Luc LANEL (1893–1965)
Large Dinanderie Vase for Christofle
France, c. 1930
A refined Art Deco vase executed in brassware by Christofle, featuring a gently flared form and bold, geometric decoration articulated through the polished surface. The stylized, repeating motifs wrap the body with a rhythmic precision characteristic of the period, while the warm, coppery tone of the metal enhances its sculptural presence. Signed "Christofle" and numbered, the piece embodies the house's transition from traditional silverwork into more modernist expressions in mixed metals.
Luc Lanel (French, 1893–1965) was a key figure in French Art Deco and served as head of Christofle's galvanoplastic department during the 1920s and 1930s. He is best known for his innovative use of metal and for iconic designs presented at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris. Lanel's work for Christofle helped define the company's modern identity, blending traditional craftsmanship with bold, forward-looking design.
Beautiful condition. Surface wear consistent with age, including visible patina, light scratches, and areas of tonal variation throughout the brass. These elements contribute to the piece's character.
