Fledermaus Chair, MODEL 728 (C.1907, Austria)

Designed by Josef Hoffmann around 1907 for the barroom of Vienna’s avant-garde Kabarett Fledermaus, this chair reflects the geometric elegance of the Wiener Werkstätte. Made of bent beechwood with a cream lacquer finish, it features a curved backrest with ladder-like slats, spherical joints, and sled-style legs. A sister chair is held in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, underscoring its historical and design significance.

The chair has been newly reupholstered with a warm cotton velvet fabric from Rose Uniacke.
