Fledermaus Chair, Model 728
c. 1907, Austria
Designed by Josef Hoffmann around 1907 for the barroom of Vienna's avant-garde Kabarett Fledermaus, this chair reflects the geometric elegance of the Wiener Werkstätte. Made of bent beechwood with a cream lacquer finish, it features a curved backrest with ladder-like slats, spherical joints, and sled-style legs. A sister chair is held in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, underscoring its historical and design significance.
Josef Hoffmann (Austrian, 1870–1956) was a pioneering architect and designer, and a co-founder of the Wiener Werkstätte. A central figure of the Vienna Secession, he championed the integration of fine art and craft, producing furniture, buildings, and decorative objects of enduring geometric elegance. His designs for the Kabarett Fledermaus and the Palais Stoclet remain icons of early modern design.
Nice vintage condition, some minor repairs over time.
