Edward Hald (1883–1980)

Optical Glass Vase for Orrefors
Sweden, c. 1930

A refined example of early Swedish functionalist glass, this sculptural vase was designed by Edward Hald and produced by Orrefors Glasbruk, circa 1930. Executed in heavy, optically blown crystal, the form presents as a pure, spherical volume resting on a contrasting black glass foot. The subtly ribbed optical patterning within the thick glass walls creates gentle distortions of light. Free of applied ornament, the vase instead celebrates the inherent beauty of the material itself — clarity, weight, and the controlled manipulation of form. The dark base provides a visual anchor, heightening the luminous quality of the upper body.

This model exemplifies the shift toward Funkis (Functionalism) in Swedish design, emerging prominently around the time of the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition, where designers embraced simplicity, geometric clarity, and the expressive potential of industrial materials. During this period, Orrefors glass became thicker, more sculptural, and often incorporated contrasting elements such as black feet to emphasize form over decoration.

About the Designer

Edward Hald (Swedish, 1883–1980) was one of the leading figures in 20th-century Scandinavian glass design. Trained initially as a painter and influenced by his studies under Henri Matisse, Hald joined Orrefors in 1917 alongside Simon Gate, helping to revolutionize the glassworks' artistic direction. While his earlier work is associated with engraved narrative scenes and the elegant "Swedish Grace" style of the 1920s, Hald later embraced the emerging ideals of modernism. By the late 1920s and early 1930s, his designs evolved toward purer, more architectural forms, focusing on volume, clarity, and optical effects rather than surface decoration. His contributions were instrumental in establishing Orrefors as a global leader in art glass.

Condition

Very good vintage condition. Light surface wear consistent with age, including minor scratches and faint internal inclusions typical of heavy art glass. The base shows slight wear commensurate with use. Overall, a well-preserved example.
