Late 19th-century smoked glass vase by Auguste Jean, featuring delicate polychrome enamel decoration of floral motifs, butterflies, and scrolling foliage. Two hot-applied sculptural geckos climb the sides of the vessel, highlighted with blue and gold enamel that contrasts beautifully with the warm amber tone of the glass.
Auguste Jean (1829–1896) was a French glassmaker celebrated for his experimental decorative techniques and imaginative enamel work on glass during the late 19th century. His works are held in major collections, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, underscoring his importance within the history of French decorative arts.
Small chips present to the inside of the neck rim; otherwise the glass and enamel decoration remain beautifully preserved.
